Today we attended an event convened by Unilever Nigeria, a supporter of our #ItStartsWithMe campaign.

Unilever Nigeria partnered with Lagos Business School to host the interactive session with Unilever Plc’s Global CEO, Mr.Paul Polman. The event took place in Lagos and focused on operating businesses in a sustainable and responsible way.

Here are some of the most memorable quotes from the event:

“We need to remember the traditional African communities that we come from. When you work somewhere you should focus on what your organization can do to benefit the greater society. Think about how to integrate sustainability into the day-to-day work. Don’t just chase profit.”
-Dr Enase Okonedo, Dean, Lagos Business School

“We live in a VUCA world. That’s Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous.”
-Mr. Paul Polman, Global CEO, Unilever Plc

“We are all citizens of the world. We have to rise to the challenge of putting the interests of others ahead of ourselves.”
-Mr. Paul Polman, Global CEO, Unilever Plc

“There is no business case in poverty. Any business that doesn’t contribute to society is blocking its own progress. Business is meant to serve society.”
-Mr. Paul Polman, Global CEO, Unilever Plc

“We need leaders that are purpose driven. With a sense of humanity and humility.”
-Mr. Paul Polman, Global CEO, Unilever Plc

And our favorite quote of the day:

“A healthy business depends on a healthy society to create demand for its products and services.”
-Mr. Paul Polman, Global CEO, Unilever Plc
