In our ongoing efforts to enhance infection prevention and control (IPC) practices in Nigeria, DRASA played a pivotal role in developing an IPC e-learning course in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

The course content is specifically aimed at educating health workers on various aspects of IPC crucial for their roles. Our goal is to significantly reduce healthcare-associated infections and promote a safer, more resilient healthcare system.

By creating this online course, we are bridging the training gap, providing a cost-effective and easily accessible resource for health workers across Nigeria. This initiative ensures that all healthcare providers, regardless of their location, can consistently deliver high-quality care and maintain the highest IPC standards throughout the country.

In line with our mission to protect public health, we joined stakeholders at Maitama District Hospital to commemorate World Hand Hygiene Day 2025 with the theme “It might be gloves. It’s always hand hygiene.”

Highlights from the event included keynote address by Dr. Tochi Okwor, (Head, Department of Disease Prevention & Health Promotion, Chair, Nigeria Antimicrobial Resistance Coordination Committee & Infection Prevention and Control Programme Coordinator, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention), an award to Ms Abigail Oke for excellence in neonatal IPC, and practical demonstrations to educate healthcare workers and patients.

At the heart of our efforts to make health facilities safer, we work closely with healthcare professionals to help them understand how critical hand hygiene is in preventing the spread of harmful germs. Germs that live on hands can easily be transferred from one surface to another, from one patient to another, and from healthcare workers to themselves, contributing to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) that endanger lives and strain health systems.

Through regular training, practical demonstrations, and monitoring, we empower healthcare workers with the knowledge and skills they need to protect themselves and their patients. Clean hands aren't just a personal practice, they are a public health priority.

This World Hand Hygiene Day, let’s continue to raise awareness, reinforce good practices, and create safer healthcare environments for all.

Let's throw it back a little, shall we?

Our work at Primary Healthcare Centres in Ibeju-Lekki, Badagry, and Ikorodu Local Government Areas of Lagos was impactful.

We focused on strengthening standard Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practices to help reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections and increase patient safety.

Participants, including both clinical and non-clinical staff, learned proper segregation of hospital waste, effective cleaning and disinfection techniques, the correct way to don and doff gloves, and essential hand hygiene practices to follow while carrying out their duties.

Our goal is to improve the capacity of Food Safety Officers to identify and reduce foodborne illnesses while monitoring and enforcing standard practices in food handling. This initiative focuses on ensuring stronger food safety practices in Oyo State.
