Today, a new organization called the Global Infectious Diseases Initiative (GIDI) launched in Lagos with a lecture and dinner event.

GIDI’s goals are to:
- Raise the awareness of the importance of the speciality of infectious diseases amongst health professionals
- Provide a scholarship fund for health professionals to be able to attend world class infectious diseases conferences all over the world
- Develop a center of excellence in infectious diseases in Nigeria
Speakers included Dr. Nadine Regis, a Haitian-American Emergency Medicine physician, who gave an overview of common and uncommon life-threatening infections, including diagnoses and treatment in the emergency room.

Dr. Yoav Golan – an expert on hospital-acquired infections, antibiotic resistance and vaccination – spoke on infection control strategies for developing countries like Nigeria and Professor Sade Ogunsola – an infection control expert and Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Lagos – gave a talk on common tropical infectious diseases and recent outbreaks.
It was a lovely evening and we look forward to collaborating with GIDI as they work towards their goals!
