Today we attended ADCEM Pharmaceutical’s 25th anniversary celebration titled “Social Enterprise in Healthcare.” ADCEM has been a supporter of DRASA from the beginning and we were honored to be part of such a milestone event.
So what is a social enterprise? A social enterprise is a business with a double bottom line: to deliver targeted social impact while also making money.
ADCEM is truly a social enterprise and a company of integrity for the following reasons:
- They support other organizations and help build capacity
- They believe in giving back to society
- They believe in excellence that cannot be compromised
At the event, the special guest of honor, Dr. Jide Idris, Honourable Commissioner for Health, Lagos state spoke about the role of social enterprises in supporting the country’s health sector. He said, “government cannot be left alone to carry the huge responsibility of providing quality healthcare,” and we couldn’t agree more. To see positive changes in our health system, we need private entities, social enterprises, and NGOs like DRASA to partner with government and work towards common goals. Collaboration is essential.
Dr. Idris also said, “our system is set up to make people sick.” This controversial statement was made in reference to the massive challenges and resource constraints in our health sector. Specifically, he mentioned that not only is health financing totally inadequate, but we also need more skilled, well-trained human resources (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc) to operate in the health sector. As he said at the end of his speech, “we need a paradigm shift.”
