Today we attended the launch of the Private Sector Engagement Strategy for Malaria Elimination (PSESP) in Lagos, Nigeria. Hosted by the Honorable Federal Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac F. Adewole; the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP); and Alhaji Aliko Dangote Chair, Dangote Foundation and Malaria Ambassador, the event unveiled a new malaria eradication strategy for Nigeria.
Why focus on malaria? An estimated 32% of all malaria deaths in the world happen in Nigeria every year. Women and children are significantly affected and 60% of all outpatient hospital visits across the country are due to malaria. Nigeria’s malaria burden is high.
The strategy document is the result of months of planning, surveys, and deliberations with key private sector leaders and stakeholders. It highlights the priority areas for private sector support in the fight against malaria as well as a strategy for private sector engagement and steps for implementation.
It was a lovely event and we look forward to seeing the outcomes of this much-needed strategy to tackle a major cause of illness and death in Nigeria. We strongly believe that public-private partnerships are the solution. Together, we can implement lasting positive changes.
Some of our favorite quotes from Honorable Federal Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac F. Adewole during the event were:
“We need to promote research. We need to understand the behavior of the mosquito.”
“We are committed to working with the private sector. We cannot do it alone.”
Alhaji Aliko Dangote shared his vision as well:
“Malaria indirectly damages the economy due to the loss of human capital.”
“I will continue to use my voice to bring attention to the fight against malaria.”
