Today, October 15th is Global Handwashing Day!
To celebrate, we partnered with Ikeja Electric and Kleanmate to visit 6 schools and had more than 1,100 students all over Lagos state washing their hands at the same time.
As usual, our goal was to use our #ItStartsWithMe campaign to educate students on the importance of handwashing as an effective way to stop the spread of diseases, use activities to show how germs spread, and teach students the proper way to wash their hands.
The 6 schools visited were:
- United Junior High School in Ikorodu
- Amuwo Odofin Junior/Secondary School in Amuwo Odofin
- Gbagada Junior Comprehensive in Shomolu
- Oke-Ira Junior Grammar School in Ikeja
- Community Junior Grammar School in Akowonjo
- Iju Obawale Junior Grammar School in Abule Egba
All 6 schools are in communities served by our partner Ikeja Electric.

Some students performed skits to demonstrate to their fellow students what happens when you don’t wash your hands. From diarrhea to cholera, the skits really showed how dirty hands affect your health. Check out the facial expressions of our actors below!
These students demonstrated how cholera is a side effect of poor handwashing and hygiene
In support of the hygiene awareness campaign, Kleanmate donated its liquid handwash which was distributed to students and teachers at each school. Ikeja Electric sponsored plaques with the 6 steps we use to teach proper handwashing and these plaques were installed on walls in each school (see the wall in the picture below).
Check out the gallery below for more pictures from some of the schools.
