The Problem

Across Nigeria, preventable infections steal everyday moments. From the delivery of a baby to a community social event, infections threaten lives and livelihoods as they spread.

In hospitals and clinics, about 16 out of every 100 Nigerians contract infections while receiving care, the highest reported rate in Africa. This points to major gaps in infection prevention and control, poor hygiene practices, lack of awareness and information, weak monitoring systems, and lack of proper equipment. While these gaps persist, drug-resistant infections compound the problem and further put patients’ health and the lives of healthcare workers at risk.

In communities, Nigeria reports at least 5 outbreaks annually where diseases like cholera and Lassa fever turn routine days into emergencies. These challenges lead to prolonged illnesses, deaths, family financial burdens, loss of jobs, and economic losses across the country.
