You may have noticed that we talk a lot about infectious diseases and outbreak preparedness. So what does the word “preparedness” actually mean? The Oxford dictionary definition:
pre·par·ed·ness
/prəˈper(ə)dnəs/
noun
a state of readiness, especially for war
Infectious disease outbreaks are not the same as war, but you get the idea. Preparedness is like insurance. It’s an investment to be ready for something that may not happen immediately, but will happen eventually. And the investment is nothing compared to the cost of last-minute response, treatment, and losses while a country battles an outbreak and deals with its aftermath.
This is the reason we are so focused on our simulation training program for infectious diseases and outbreak preparedness. We need to do our part to make sure Nigeria is prepared for the next outbreak.
